Cerebrolysin: clinical research and the supplier-label problem
Cerebrolysin refers to a complex peptide preparation studied mainly in neurological conditions such as stroke and dementia. The Available Peptides catalog lists a supplier-labeled 30 mg item and explicitly notes no certificate of analysis. That means the identity and equivalence of this particular product to the liquid medicine used in trials are not established. [1]
How might it work?
The clinical preparation contains a mixture of small peptides derived from porcine brain proteins. Researchers have proposed neurotrophic and protective effects. A proposed mechanism does not establish improved memory in healthy people, and a differently labeled dry vial may not contain the trial preparation. [1–3]
What did trials find?
A large double-blind trial enrolled 1,070 adults with acute ischemic stroke. Participants received clinical Cerebrolysin or placebo in addition to aspirin. The prespecified combined outcome at 90 days did not differ significantly between groups. A post-hoc subgroup trend is hypothesis-generating, not a reversal of the main negative result. [2]
Smaller stroke-rehabilitation trials have reported favorable neurological scores, and some Alzheimer’s disease trials reported cognitive or global-function changes. Their different populations, endpoints, and treatment schedules make the evidence mixed. None tested this supplier's 30 mg vial or established a general-purpose cognitive boost. [3,4]
Safety and product identity
Intravenous treatment in a clinical trial involves a defined sterile preparation and monitoring. A supplier name and a milligram figure do not verify composition, sterility, or equivalence. The missing certificate of analysis makes the product gap especially important here. [1–4]
STUDIED AMOUNT
How much?
SOURCE CONTEXT
What it refers to
studied stroke-trial schedule for the defined clinical Cerebrolysin preparation.
30 mL daily by intravenous infusion for 10 days — studied stroke-trial schedule for the defined clinical Cerebrolysin preparation. The large trial using it did not meet its main efficacy endpoint. Another Alzheimer's trial studied 30 mL five days per week for four weeks. These are disease-specific research schedules, not a general wellness dose. [2,4]
Read detailed dosing notes
No amount in milligrams can be responsibly derived for the catalog vial. A 30 mg label is not comparable to 30 mL of a complex clinical product, particularly without independent confirmation of what is in the vial. [1–4]
