Huperzine A
What is it?
Huperzine A is an active compound found in the Huperzia serrata plant. The pictured pre-workout label lists 10 mg of extract standardized to 1% huperzine A. If the label is accurate and the percentage is by weight, one scoop provides about 100 micrograms (mcg) of active huperzine A.
How does it work?
Huperzine A slows acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine. This messenger helps your brain and muscles send signals. In a study of healthy adults, 100–200 mcg measurably inhibited the enzyme, but cognitive tests did not show a consistent improvement. That gives huperzine A a real biological rationale without proving better gym focus or a stronger mind-muscle connection. [1]
Why is it in pre-workout?
It is included for the possibility of better attention during training. An older, small study reported better memory scores in students after four weeks of use. That is different from taking one scoop before lifting. [2]
In the most directly relevant exercise study, 15 trained adults took 200 mcg or placebo before testing. The researchers found no clear advantage in the cognitive or exercise-performance tests they used. Because it was one small, single-dose study, a modest benefit or a benefit in a different kind of workout remains possible. [3]
A pre-workout with several ingredients may feel helpful, but that experience alone cannot show how much huperzine A contributed.

What it refers to
active huperzine A per scoop
This is a label amount, not an established effective workout dose. Huperzine A can interact with medicines that affect the same acetylcholine pathway; ask a clinician or pharmacist if you use those medicines.

That comes from 10 mg of Huperzia serrata extract standardized to 1% huperzine A. This is the label amount, not an established effective workout dose. Check the active huperzine A amount when comparing products; studies have not established the best amount for workout focus. [1,3]
Huperzine A may interact with medicines that affect the same acetylcholine pathway, including donepezil, galantamine, and rivastigmine. Ask a clinician or pharmacist before combining them. [4]
